What is direct cremation?
Direct cremation is a cremation that takes place without a funeral service or viewing beforehand.
It is often chosen by families who want a simple arrangement, who prefer privacy, or who plan to hold a memorial later in their own time. For some, it is about keeping things uncomplicated. For others, it is about managing costs while still ensuring their loved one is cared for with dignity.
At Simplicity, direct cremation does not mean less care. It simply means a different kind of farewell.
What’s included in Simplicity’s direct cremation service
Our Simply Dignified Plan covers everything your loved one needs from our care to the cremation itself — clearly, and without hidden costs:

Bringing your loved one into our care
Essential mortuary care, with no embalming
A basic casket
Transfer to Canterbury or Harewood Crematorium
The cremation fee
Death certificate, available within 10 days of cremation
Ashes available from the crematorium within 2 working days.
When families choose direct cremation
Direct cremation may be the right choice when:
- Your loved one wanted a simple farewell.
- You would prefer a private cremation with no formal service.
- You plan to hold a memorial later.
- Family need more time before gathering together.
- Keeping costs manageable is important.
A memorial can still happen later
Choosing direct cremation does not close the door on a meaningful farewell.
Many families prefer to separate the practical arrangements from the personal gathering. You may wish to hold a memorial later at home, at a special place, or with family and friends once everyone has had time to gather. Simplicity’s current plan card also notes that additional services such as service sheets or a photo tribute slideshow can be arranged if you are organising your own memorial service.
That flexibility is often part of the appeal. You can keep the cremation simple, while still creating space for remembrance in a way that feels right for your family.
What direct cremation does not include
Direct cremation is intended as a simple, unattended service, so it does not include a funeral ceremony or viewing beforehand.
If you would prefer something with more family involvement, Simplicity also offers other options, including:
- Viewing followed by cremation.
- A small family gathering followed by cremation.
- A funeral or memorial service followed by cremation.
Simple, respectful, and fully cared for
At Simplicity, every plan includes the same standard of care. What changes is the style of service and the level of personalisation.
That means families choosing direct cremation can still expect professionalism, compassion, and clear guidance throughout the process.
